Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
- New member induction takes place in March and April. Membership
applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner you
get your application in, the better.
- Our membership year runs March 1 to March 1. We do not sell partial-year or
pro-rated memberships.
- Members are allowed to use the club facilities 365 days a year, from 8am
to 1/2-hour before sunset. Members use all club facilities for free, except
for bird fees for the trap range(4) and activity fees for certain events such as
IHMSA Silhouette or USPSA Pistol matches. An OGC membership is generally considered
to be a "family" membership, as you can bring your spouse or children out to the range
during members-only hours(5) at no extra charge.
- During members-only hours, your children must be under your direct
supervision at all times. During public hours, children under the age of 18,
including member's children,
are not allowed on the range unless they have a DNR Firearms Safety Certificate.
Children of members are given preferential placement in our hunter safety classes.
- Membership applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable $25 application
fee. This $25 is applied to reduce your $100 initiation fee, meaning the actual
amount you pay when you enroll is $160 ($75 initiation balance + $85 first-year dues)
unless you are also joining the NRA when you join OGC).
- If your membership application fee check is cashed, your application has been
accepted, and you should not expect to hear from OGC again until late February, 2008,
at which time you will be notified as to when and where to complete the process
of enrolling in the club. If you move or change your phone number, please notify
us so that we can contact you.
(1) "Sponsor" is perhaps too strong a word; "mentor" might be more accurate.
Your sponsor is a current member who can help answer your questions and get you
involved in the many activities Oakdale Gun Club has to offer. If you do not know
a current member of Oakdale Gun Club, indicate so on your application form and
a sponsor will be assigned to you.
(2) The Range Officer safety training session
and new member orientation session have been combined into one class that takes
approximately four hours. Several Orientation/Training Classes will be
available on a variety of evening and weekend hours to accomodate the widest possible
range of schedules. You must attend and complete an orientation and training session
before you can be enrolled in OGC.
(3) The 18-hour range duty
requirement is waived for members
serving on active duty with our armed forces and in the case of certain medical
conditions. Exemptions for service personnel are granted automatically. Persons
seeking medical exemptions must contact the OGC Board of Directors for more information.
(4) OGC has both manual and automatic
trap machines. The automatic trap machines are set-up for a specific brand and
weight of clay bird. If you want to use the automatic trap machines, you must complete
a brief training class and then use only the approved birds, which you can
buy from the club.
If you want to use the manual trap machines, you may use any brand and weight
of clay bird you like.
During members-only hours, there is no charge for using the trap machines,
but use of the trap range is on a first-come, first-served basis.
During public hours and on league night, members pay a discounted price per round
of 25 birds, as the club supplies both the birds and the people to run the
machine.
(5) OGC is open to the public from 8am to 4:30pm
on weekends and selected
national holidays, from the beginning of June to the end of September, and open
to the public seven days a week from the beginning of October to the end of
firearms deer season (the last Sunday before Thanksgiving). The remaining six
months of the year, and all other dates and times not listed as public hours,
are members-only time and reserved for members, their families, and
members' guests, except when pre-empted for scheduled competitions or
training events.
Members may also use the club facilities during public hours; they simply must
abide by the public-hours rules. In extremely short summary,
this means that during public hours:
- Members must check-in at the Clubhouse before going to a range
- Members must obey the commands of the Range Safety Officer running the
range they are using, if the range is open to the public
- Members' children under the age of 18 may not shoot on any range that is
open to the public, unless they have their DNR Firearms Safety Certificate
(Selected ranges may be closed to the public, in which case the members-only
rules apply.)
- Members must pay any applicable public-hours bird fees or activity fees
- Members' guests and non-immediate family members(6)
must pay the same range fees as any other member of the general public
(6) Yes, we know it's the 21st century, but work
with us, please. "Immediate family" is your spouse
or children. If you want to argue that your
brother-in-law's kid sister's ex-fiance is just like a son to you, call
Jerry Springer.
