Cowboy Action

Cowboy Action shooting combines elements of practical pistol and historical re-enactment in a sport that can only be described as "really noisy fun." Shooters dress in period costumes and compete in character, using the firearms of the 19th century.

Most Cowboy Action matches are three-gun events that require a single-action revolver, a rifle, and a shotgun, but you can get started in the sport with just a handgun, a holster, and a hat. While some competitors do use original frontier-era guns such as Colt Peacemakers and Winchester carbines, most competitors have somewhat more down-to-earth budgets and use modern-made replicas such as Ruger or Uberti revolvers, Rossi or Marlin carbines, and Stevens or Norinco double-barrelled shotguns.

The sanctioning body for Cowboy Action matches is The Single-Action Shooting Society (SASS).

While Oakdale Gun Club has had an active Cowboy Action program in the past and still lists a Cowboy Action Match Director on the roster of officers, nobody has seen or heard from him in a few years. Anyone interested in reviving this fun but moribund program is asked to contact the Oakdale Gun Club Board of Directors at .
